Roz Dixon,Peter K. Smith: Rethinking School Bullying : Towards an Integrated Model

Rethinking School Bullying : Towards an Integrated Model

Description

What would make anti-bullying initiatives more successful? This book offers a new approach to the problem of school bullying. The question of what constitutes a useful theory of bullying is considered and suggestions are made as to how priorities for future research might be identified. The integrated, systemic model of school bullying introduced in this book is based on four qualitative studies and incorporates theory from systemic thinking; cognitive, social, developmental and psychoanalytic psychology; sociology, socio-biology and ethology. The possible functions served by bullying behaviour are explored. Consideration is also given to the potential role of unconscious as well as conscious processes in bullying. The model suggests a number of causal processes within one-to-one relationships and peer groups, and highlights factors within individuals and schools that shape the form, intensity and duration of bullying behaviour in practice. The issue of 'difference' is also addressed, focusing on childhood deafness.

Description

What is trauma? How does it change the way our brains work? And how can we overcome it? When something traumatic happens to us, we dissociate and our bodies shut down their normal processes. This unique comic explains the strange nature of trauma and how it confuses the brain and affects the body. With wonderful artwork, cat and mouse metaphors, essential scientific facts, and a healthy dose of wit, the narrator reveals how trauma resolution involves changing the body's physiology and describes techniques that can achieve this, including Trauma Releasing Exercises that allow the body to shake away tension, safely releasing deep muscular patterns of stress and trauma.

Model Engineering: A Foundation Course

Description

Written by an experienced engineer, this new primer textbook covers all the basic techniques of model engineering: understanding engineering drawings; setting up a workshop; buying materials; marking out; sawing; filing; bending & forming metals; drilling & boring holes. The book includes a review of the properties and characteristics of engineering materials and describes the hardening of carbon steel for cutting tools in the home workshop. Sources of information for model engineers are described together with the principal types of activity and common modelling scales. Points for consideration when buying a lathe are covered, plus how it should be set up and operated. Also included is information on the preparation and sharpening of lathe tools and their use for the basic turning processes. A major chapter is dedicated to the adaptation of the lathe for milling and boring, and the use of the commonest types of milling cutter. Profusely illustrated with line drawings and photographs, this is a comprehensive guide aimed at students and practical people with little experience of working with metal and wishing to embark on this fascinating hobby.

The Dirty Dust: CRE na Cille

Description

Now available in paperback, the original English-language translation of O Cadhain's raucous masterpiece Mairtin O Cadhain's irresistible and infamous novel The Dirty Dust is consistently ranked as the most important prose work in modern Irish, yet no translation for English-language readers has ever before been published. Alan Titley's vigorous new translation, full of the brio and guts of O Cadhain's original, at last brings the pleasures of this great satiric novel to the far wider audience it deserves. In The Dirty Dust all characters lie dead in their graves. This, however, does not impair their banter or their appetite for news of aboveground happenings from the recently arrived. Told entirely in dialogue, O Cadhain's daring novel listens in on the gossip, rumors, backbiting, complaining, and obsessing of the local community. In the afterlife, it seems, the same old life goes on beneath the sod. Only nothing can be done about it-apart from talk. In this merciless yet comical portrayal of a closely bound community, O Cadhain remains keenly attuned to the absurdity of human behavior, the lilt of Irish gab, and the nasty, deceptive magic of human connection.

A Small Weeping

Description

The body of a prostitute is found at Glasgow s Queen Street Station, her hands, pointing towards her feet, placed as if in prayer, a small flower pressed between the palms. Psychologist Solomon Brightman is called to assist DCI Lorimer in the murder hunt, with the hope that his lateral thinking will shine a light on the case from a different angle. But before any conclusions can be drawn, the body of a nurse is discovered at The Grange, a private clinic. Aside from the careful arrangement of the corpses, there is no obvious connection between the victims; Lorimer and Solomon are still very much in the dark. Then a third body turns up, and it seems increasingly clear that they have a serial killer on their hands."

Comprehensively updated with many new speeches including Earl Spencer's lament to "The extraordinary and irreplaceable Diana," Nikita Khrushchev's secret speech of 1956 signalling the beginning of the end of Stalinist Russia, Patrick Pearse's rousing funeral oration that fanned the flames of the Easter Rising, Kevin Rudd's historic apology to A Small Weeping free ebook Australia's mistreated Aborigines and Barack Obama's momentous US election night victory speech. As a seasoned profiler, Tony is convinced that the new murders aren't the work of a copycat killer. Together, he and Carol prowl the mist-shrouded alleyways of tawdry Temple Fields, tracking a cunning serial killer who seems to be safely locked away yet somehow simultaneously on the loose, preparing to strike again... Val McDermid has crafted another chilling and suspenseful mystery for Tony and Carol in "The Torment of Others."

Ross W. Greene: Lost and Found: Helping Behaviorally Challenging Students (and, While You're at it, All the Others)

Lost and Found: Helping Behaviorally Challenging Students (and, While You're at it, All the Others)

Description

Implement a more constructive approach to difficult students Lost and Found is a follow-up to Dr. Ross Greene's landmark works, The Explosive Child and Lost at School, providing educators with highly practical, explicit guidance on implementing his Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS) Problem Solving model with behaviorally-challenging students. While the first two books described Dr. Greene's positive, constructive approach and described implementation on a macro level, this useful guide provides the details of hands-on CPS implementation by those who interact with these children every day. Readers will learn how to incorporate students' input in understanding the factors making it difficult for them to meet expectations and in generating mutually satisfactory solutions. Specific strategies, sample dialogues, and time-tested advice help educators implement these techniques immediately. The groundbreaking CPS approach has been a revelation for parents and educators of behaviorally-challenging children. This book gives educators the concrete guidance they need to immediately begin working more effectively with these students. * Implement CPS one-on-one or with an entire class * Work collaboratively with students to solve problems * Study sample dialogues of CPS in action * Change the way difficult students are treated The discipline systems used in K-12 schools are obsolete, and aren't working for the kids to whom they're most often applied those with behavioral challenges. Lost and Found provides a roadmap to a different paradigm, helping educators radically transform the way they go about helping their most challenging students.

At the age of twelve, Joel Knox is summoned to meet the father who abandoned him at birth. But when Joel arrives at the decaying mansion in Skully s Landing, his father is nowhere in sight. What he finds instead is a sullen stepmother who delights in killing birds; an uncle with the face and heart of a debauched child; and a fearsome little girl named Idabel who may offer him the closest thing he has ever known to love." "How to Get Rich" is different from any other book on the subject because Dennis Lost and Found: Helping Behaviorally Challenging Students (and, While You're at it, All the Others) download epub isn't selling snake oil, investment tips, or motivational claptrap. He merely wants to help people embrace entrepreneurship, and to share lessons he learned the hard way. He reveals, for example, why a regular paycheck is like crack cocaine; why great ideas are vastly overrated; and why "ownership isn't the important thing, it's the only thing."

Paul Boghossian: Fear of Knowledge: Against Relativism and Constructivism

Fear of Knowledge: Against Relativism and Constructivism

Description

The academic world has been plagued in recent years by scepticism about truth and knowledge. Paul Boghossian, in his long-awaited first book, sweeps away relativist claims that there is no such thing as objective truth or knowledge, but only truth or knowledge from a particular perspective. He demonstrates clearly that such claims don't even make sense. Boghossian focuses on three different ways of reading the claim that knowledge is socially constructed - one as a thesis about truth and two about justification. And he rejects all three. The intuitive, common-sense view is that there is a way things are that is independent of human opinion, and that we are capable of arriving at belief about how things are that is objectively reasonable, binding on anyone capable of appreciating the relevant evidence regardless of their social or cultural perspective. Difficult as these notions may be, it is a mistake to think that recent philosophy has uncovered powerful reasons for rejecting them. This short, lucid, witty book shows that philosophy provides rock-solid support for common sense against the relativists; it will prove provocative reading throughout the discipline and beyond.

This brilliantly funny little book includes lists of interesting and little-known facts about the series, Sir Humphrey's finest obfuscations, Jim Hacker's speeches, the service's best acronyms, famous fans and their reflections, profiles and obituaries of the characters and the actors who played them, the Department for Administrative Affairs guide to using creative inertiaA", important dates, classic scenes, the entire legendary Margaret Thatcher sketch, and interviews with those in the knowA". This is the perfect Christmas gift for fans of British comedy. Numerous visitors have been impressed by the acknowledgement given to the potential of children, the organisation and quality of the environments created, the promotion of collegiality and a climate of co-participation of families in the educational project. Fear of Knowledge: Against Relativism and Constructivism download PDF This book reflects the impressions and experiences of the Reggio Emilia approach gained by a range of early childhood educators following a study visit to the region. It focusses on key issues such as staffing, training, working with parents, play, learning, the culture of early childhood, and special educational needs, from a variety of perspectives and will provide a welcome challenge to thinking for both practitioners and policy makers.

The Biopsychosocial Formulation Manual: A Guide for Mental Health Professionals

Description

Based on George Engel's model, The Biopsychosocial Formulation Manual presents ways to help psychiatry residents and students effectively gather and organize patient data to arrive at a complete mental health history in a limited timeframe. While most current models only take one factor into account, Campbell and Rohrbaugh emphasize and analyze three essential components (biological, social, and psychological). The process of identifying pertinent data for each component of the biopsychosocial formulation is explicated in detail. A separate section outlines how to use the biopsychosocial formulation to generate treatment recommendations. This volume includes a complete package for practicing the biopsychosocial method; this easy-to-use guide includes a data record sheet and a companion CD to facilitate organization and assessment, appealing to both the psychiatric professional and the trainee.

In this passionate, lucid, and surprising book, Timothy Morton argues that all forms of life are connected in a vast, entangling mesh. This interconnectedness penetrates all dimensions of life. No being, construct, or object can exist independently from the ecological entanglement, Morton contends, nor does "Nature" exist as an entity separate from the uglier or more synthetic elements of life. Realizing this interconnectedness is what Morton Bad Blood free epub calls the ecological thought. In three concise chapters, Morton investigates the profound philosophical, political, and aesthetic implications of the fact that all life forms are interconnected. As a work of environmental philosophy and theory, "The Ecological Thought" explores an emerging awareness of ecological reality in an age of global warming. Using Darwin and contemporary discoveries in life sciences as root texts, Morton describes a mesh of deeply interconnected life forms - intimate, strange, and lacking fixed identity.
